YAWNING HIPPO BUDGET ACCOMMODATION Bed
& Continental Breakfast - US$45.00
per person per night sharing Nestled
amongst massive old Mahogany and Terminalia trees in a secluded corner
of a lush private garden, the Yawning Hippo Cottage overlooks a
large floodplain that seasonally fills with the overflow from the two
rivers, resulting in a water wonderland of water lilies and other
aquatic vegetation, which attracts hippos and waterfowl in abundance.
The plain is home to resident waterbuck, impala, warthog, chacma
baboon, vervet monkeys, slender mongoose, monitor lizards and
squirrels. Elephant, buffalo and crocodile are commonly seen and some
of our nocturnal visitors include hyeana, leopard, serval, genet,
porcupines, water mongoose and bush babies. When the floodwaters
recede a few deep pools remain that could hold water for most of the
year. The birdlife is spectacular and includes amongst many others
carmine and white-fronted bee-eaters nesting in the banks of the
floodplain opposite the cottage. The dawn chorus and your early
morning wake up call of tooting ground hornbills, cackling red-billed
francolins and crooning Heuglins’ robins is an absolute delight.
This
self-catering African style cottage (with Bed & Breakfast options)
consists of: one double bedded mosquito-proof Meru tent with en suite
reed bathroom (shower & basin with hot and cold water &
flush toilet), kitchenette, dining nook and shady verandah –
all under one roof. It is
fully furnished and serviced and has access to the family swimming
pool. The property is secure and enclosed by an electric fence and a
gate that is locked overnight. We do have dogs and horses that have
free run of the property. It is ideal for a couple of nature and
animal lovers or honeymooners, who prefer a quiet repose with a quaint
ambience. For
small families we can offer a baby cot or sleeper-couch or erect a
two-man tent adjacent to the cottage for some outdoor fun for older
children. A shady playground with sandpit, jungle gym and swings will
keep the young ones busy while the parents relax and unwind. Children
must be supervised at all times and to give moms and dads a break a
baby sitter can be hired to help look after the kids. Pony rides can
be arranged. All
meals are available on request. Continental or English breakfasts,
light lunches (sandwiches, ploughman’s lunches or salads) and good
home-cooked dinners can be provided. A decadent alternative is High
Tea. All meals and drinks must please be pre-booked and require a
minimum of 24 hour’s fair warning as we cannot always guarantee
supplies on the fringes of the bush. However,
you are welcome to do all your own catering. If you need fresh food
supplies (meat, bread, milk, fruit & vegetables) or drinks, we can
lend a hand. Alternatively a private and experienced cook is also on
hand to prepare your own or the children’s food to your specific
preference, while you are out game-driving or fishing, to allow you
more free time to enjoy our beautiful corner of paradise. We are happy to make suggestions for your travel plans and can handle all your bookings and reservations within the Four Nations region. Activities
